Springtime has a long list of lawn-maintenance tasks. While you may consider your fence to be pretty low on that list, it is still important that you make sure everything is okay. Whether it’s made of vinyl, wrought iron, aluminum, wood, or chain-link, spring weather is often unpredictable and can take its toll on your fencing. Performing regular fence inspections can help you spot damage before it becomes a big problem.
Check Your Landscaping
Your landscaping is an important part of the curb appeal of your property. You spend a lot of time maintaining the plants, but it is important to also keep an eye on how your landscaping is affecting any fencing that might be near it. Start by inspecting the trees that are closest to your fences. Any weak or loose branches should be removed so that they don’t fall on the fence. Next, take a look at any shrubs and bushes you may have. Trim them so they’re not touching the fence. A few inches of clearance should be sufficient. Just enough space so that air can flow through and dry the fence when there’s rain. Some weeds grow in vines and can easily climb up your plants and fences. These should be removed as soon as possible at the roots to prevent re-growth.
Is the Fence as Strong as It Should Be?
Next, perform a simple test to see if your fence is still as strong as it should be. Walk around the fence and push down on the posts one by one and see if they move or stay firmly in place. If any of them move at all, mark them for closer inspection because they may need to be repaired or replaced.
Repairing Weather Damage
Spring is often quite rainy here on the east coast and all of that water can damage your fence, especially when paired with the humidity we often feel. Extreme heat isn’t going to be doing you any favors, either. If there is a storm or any other particularly large weather event, you should inspect your fence closely for any signs of damage and fix them as soon as possible. Small issues that are easily fixed can turn into big, costly problems that are much more difficult to fix.
