Protect Your Residential Fence from Spring Storm Damage

Protecting your residential fence from spring storm damage can save you a lot of money and headache later with some proactive steps.

Spring  promises warmer weather, blooming flowers, and, unfortunately, unpredictable storms. As a homeowner, preparing your property for whatever spring sends your way is crucial. One area often overlooked in storm preparation is your home’s fencing, which is susceptible to damage if not adequately maintained or reinforced. Here are some essential tips to protect your residential fence to ensure it stands up to spring storms.

Residential Fence Maintenance

Regular, seasonal maintenance is crucial to keep your fence in optimal condition. The change from cold to warmer temperatures can be harsh on your fence. Start by thoroughly inspecting your fence for loose or broken boards. These can compromise the structure’s ability to withstand strong winds or heavy rain. If you notice any damaged boards, you should repair or replace them immediately. This ensures the safety and stability of your fence and helps prevent further damage. In addition to inspecting the boards, check for loose screws or nails. Over time, these fasteners can become loose due to significant weather exposure or general wear and tear.

Trim Trees

Most storm fence damage comes from tree limbs that have fallen on the fence and crushed one or more sections. You may easily prevent this from happening by removing overhanging limbs. If the tree in question happens to be on your neighbor’s property, ask if they can have the overhanging limbs removed. It’s also a good idea to inspect your trees to ensure they aren’t dead or dying–as a heavy storm will uproot them.

Clean Your Yard

Remove any debris and leaves that may have accumulated around the fence throughout the fall and winter season. These items cause damage during high winds and can lead to moisture retention and potential rot — especially with wood fencing. You should also clear your yard of any patio items before a storm hits. The last thing you want is a chair or an umbrella flying into and damaging your fencing. Make sure you take all your yard and patio items indoors before a storm hits.

Secure Your Gates

If you have a gate on your residential fence, you should lock it with a padlock or chain. High winds can cause a gate door to slam against your fence or the side of your house, causing considerable damage. Some gates are easily removable from their hinges and stored in the garage until the storm has passed.
