Do You Need a K-Rated Fence?

Do You Need a K-Rated Fence?

The K-rating system provides the fence’s measure of durability to not only make you aware of the type of impact that the fence can withstand, but the rating system also helps reduce the need for expensive repairs and replacements.

Did you know that there is a rating system associated with fencing? Fences are rated according to their measure of durability. Every fence serves a different purpose. Those purposes include security, privacy, property separation, and even curb appeal. In any application, the fence should be strong, durable, and reliable. The K-rating system provides the fence’s measure of durability to not only make you aware of the type of impact that the fence can withstand, but the rating system also helps reduce the need for expensive repairs and replacements. Here’s all you need to know about K-rated fences.

What is the K-Rating?

The K-rating is the strength measurement for the fence based on a crash test certification. The ratings are assigned by the U.S. Department of State and are mainly based on the fence’s ability to withstand the force of a head-on impact from a large vehicle. During the crash test, once the impact has been made, the fence is then inspected for its damage and then assigned a rating.

How is the K-Rating Measured?

The measurement for K-rated fences is based on the resistance to ramming and impact. The crash tests occur at various speeds ranging from 30 miles per hour up to 50 miles per hour. The tests are usually conducted with a 15,000-pound pickup truck to determine whether the structure and strength of the fence are strong enough to keep the pickup truck from completely penetrating it. The K4 rating stops a vehicle at 30 miles per hour. K6 stops a vehicle traveling at 40 miles per hour. A fence with a K8 rating can stop a vehicle traveling at 50 miles per hour.

Applications for K-Rated Fences

K-Rated fences are especially useful and important for government facilities, military campuses, power plants, commercial office spaces, and even some residential properties. While some crashes may occur accidentally, they also need to withstand the possibility of purposeful attacks.
