How to Maintain Your Wrought Iron Fence

How to Maintain Your Wrought Iron Fence

If you’re looking for something a bit more permanent, then wrought iron could be the choice for you. Here is how to maintain your wrought iron fence.

Think for a minute what would happen if your chain link fence gave out. You would need to replace it, right? If you’re looking for something a bit more permanent, then wrought iron could be the choice for you. Here is how to maintain your wrought iron fence.

Cleaning It Up

Like all fences, you will need to clean your wrought iron fence. First, fill a bucket with warm water and some detergent. Alternatively, you could use dish soap, too. Don’t forget about the sponge before you go to start cleaning. A gentle wipe down should be all you need to get rid of dirt, dust, leaves, and stains.

That said, don’t use any chemical cleaners. These solutions can strip away the metal on your wrought iron fence. Avoid using a stiff brush, as you could scratch the paint or the finish – this is even more likely if your wrought iron fence has been powder coated to change its color. Then once you’re done, give your fence a good rinse so that soap residue doesn’t leave any lasting damage by accident.

Getting Rid of Rust

Rust is the worst enemy of your wrought iron fence. If you think about it, rust is bad for anything made of metal. Use steel wool or sandpaper to get rid of the rust. You may also need a sander, depending on how badly rusted your fence is. After sanding, use vinegar and water to eliminate the last bit of rust that you couldn’t remove.

Getting rid of rust can leave your wrought iron fence looking rough. That’s why you should take some time and repaint it. Use paint that is specially formulated for metal or wrought iron, or else you’ll be unhappy with the results. Put up to three coats of paint to ensure the best results.
