Getting Rid of Vinyl Fence Discoloration Issues

Getting Rid of Vinyl Fence Discoloration Issues

Why does it change color? And how can you help it get back to its old self?

Your vinyl fence has probably seen better days. Even though it is incredibly durable and low maintenance for what it is, you still have to take care of it. Why does it change color? And how can you help it get back to its old self? Here is a handy guide!

The Causes

Old vinyl fences or ones that are made from poor-quality vinyl are more likely to become discolored. It’s just an unfortunate fact that this is the case. Brand new vinyl fences, especially the ones made these days, are of much higher quality and are more resistant to staining and discoloration. Mildew and hard water can cause these stains, as can sun exposure, as we will see later on.

Dealing with It

Try using a rust-removing product that is safe to use on vinyl. Doing this should be enough to get rid of the stains and help restore your fence to the way it used to be. To get rid of mildew, you’ll need a mix of water and bleach. This solution must be diluted in order to work without causing undue damage. After cleaning the fence, add some sealant to it. This sealant will stop the more stains from forming in the future!

UV Exposure?

So now let’s talk about UV exposure. Sadly, you won’t be able to get rid of these stains. The reason for this is that sunlight can get through the surface of the vinyl, and there’s really no way to keep that from happening. Your vinyl will turn yellow, especially if it’s white. Power washing won’t help anything, either. All you can do is to try painting over the staining. Although you can restore the fence’s original color, you might still have to be on the lookout for other problems that could crop up in the meantime. A coat of paint will last a little while, but at some point, you’ll need to do it over again. Keep in mind though, if you don’t want to have to keep repainting your fence, then it might be time to get a different one!
