Getting Rid of Splinters in Your Wooden Fence

Today we’ll walk you through the process of repairing a splintered fence segment.

Wood fencing is a great way to improve the look, value, and safety of your home, but it comes with some maintenance needs. Along with cleaning and staining or painting, you may eventually need to repair some sections that have become splintered. While splintering may be rough and unpleasant to look at, there’s no need to replace an entire panel unless the damage is to multiple boards. Instead, today we’ll walk you through the process of repairing a splintered fence segment.

What You’ll Need

The materials you’ll need to start your process is fairly simple; coarse and fine grain sandpaper, protective gloves, wood putty that matches your fence color, a damp cloth, and a matte polyurethane spray. Having a matte spray is critical as gloss will be incredibly apparent.

Getting Started

One of the first steps it to ensure you’re starting with a clean surface. If it’s been a while since you last cleaned your fence do that first. While you will be sanding, if there is a layer of pollen or mildew it may interfere. Next, start by sanding with the grain of the wood using the coarse followed by the fine grit sandpaper. Once you’ve fully sanded you’ll wipe down the area with the damp cloth to remove any wood particles.

Applying Putty

After letting the fence dry for about an hour, it should be fully dry before you do anything else. Next, add your putty to fill any rough splintered or pitted areas. This will help ensure that the splintering does not continue. Let the putty dry according to the directions; usually one to two hours. If needed, sand down the dried putty to make it flush with the wood.

Seal It Up

With the putty dry and the area wiped clean once more, you can spray the entire section with your matte sealant. Not only will this protect the fence, but it will dry to appear as if nothing is there. This will prevent any further splintering and protect the area from the weather.
