What Fencing Materials Last the Longest?

Fences make a great addition to just about any property. They provide safety and security for your family, pets, and belongings. They also can increase the curb appeal and property value of your home while providing you with privacy to enjoy your outdoor living areas in peace. If you don’t have a fence and are considering this addition (or if your fence is older and needs replacing), it is a great choice, but you will have lots of options to consider. If longevity is one of your primary concerns, consider these fencing materials that truly stand the test of time.

What Fencing Materials Last the Longest?

If you’re concerned about the longevity of your fence, consider these fencing materials that truly stand the test of time.

Metal

Among fencing materials, metal is a popular choice for many uses, particularly decorative fencing such as wrought iron. Chainlink is another popular metal option because it is quick to install, fairly inexpensive, and very durable. Chainlink is also the longest lasting fencing material on the market, since it is made entirely of galvanized steel. Most metal fencing requires little maintenance, with chainlink requiring almost none. Wrought iron requires the most, and that is simply a rust-resistant finish every few years.

Vinyl

Vinyl fencing is an extremely popular fencing material, and it gets more popular every day. It is easy to work with, even as a DIY project if you want to try installing it yourself. It is also a great financial choice; even if it isn’t as cheap as many wood options, it requires almost no maintenance, so the total costs often even out in the lifetime of the fence. Speaking of the lifetime of the fence, for vinyl that is often 20 years or more, making this a very worthwhile investment.

Wood

Wood is the traditional fencing material as far as most people are concerned, since it offers classic beauty and various styles, including shadowbox. Its longevity, however, depends on several factors. First, the type of wood that you use plays a role: cedar has the most longevity at fifteen to thirty years, while pine has the least at four to seven years. If the wood is treated, you get more life from the fence, often more than doubling the lifespan. Finally, wooden fencing requires maintenance – doing proper yearly care will improve the durability and longevity of your wooden fence tremendously.
