Calm Down Climbers
Certain larger breeds are smarter and braver than others and willing to climb up a fence to see what’s on the other side. Chain link residential fences aren’t great for holding dogs in since they provide footholds. It’s probably a good idea to invest in a solid privacy fence – it has the bonus of keeping your dog from barking at everything if they are a particularly noisy pup.
Defeat Diggers
Some dogs, especially smaller breeds, tend to dig. Maybe they are bred to dig for rats and stop, or they simply aren’t big enough or nimble enough to try and make it over the top. In any case, you should do your best to prevent diggers from getting out. For this to work, the base of the fence needs to be set several inches underground as well. Adding a skirt of mesh fence netting is also a good idea for stopping any doggies who like to dig.
Find Those Pesky Flaws
Inspect your fence. Soil erosion can weaken the structural integirty of the fence. If it leans or falls down, it might be easier for your dog (and sometimes, your cat) to escape. That’s why it’s so important to figure out where the flaws could be in your fence, and patch them up as soon as you can.
Stop the Smarties
You’ve also got to do what you can to stop other dogs who think they can outsmart you. It might not always seem obvious, but some types of dogs are smarter than their human pack – you might have noticed from observing herding behavior or reminders to follow a particular routine!
