Anatomy of a Wooden Fence

As far as fences go, you can’t go wrong with a wooden fence. They’re not just traditional classics: a good wooden fence will also provide you with security and privacy.

As far as fences go, you can’t go wrong with a wooden fence. They’re not just traditional classics: a good wooden fence will also provide you with security and privacy. Beyond all the functions you get from a good wooden fence, you also get the timeless look that comes with it. Many people want a wooden fence these days. While you may be on the hunt for one yourself, you may come up with a laundry list of questions that we’re here to answer. Let’s take a look at the basic elements of a wooden fence and what the average consumer needs to know.

Posts

Think of the posts as the backbone of your fence. They’re the vertical elements that actually get put into the concrete that connects your fence to the ground. When properly set and installed, posts can make for a steady fence that isn’t going to go anywhere any time soon. Wood fence posts are usually 4×4 though that obviously depends on what your specific fence needs on. Either way, you’re going to rely on your fence posts to keep your fence where you need it to be and act as the spine of your entire project.

Rails

Rails can sometimes be known as fence rails, fence stringers, or backer rails. This is the part of your fence that runs between posts. They connect the posts via fasteners and ultimately keep all those pickets connected. There are all kinds of fence styles out there, but most commonly, we end up seeing two or three rails running in between posts. These rails are typically made with 2x lumber, but it entirely depends on what kind of style you’re going for. Different spacing can call for different kinds of rails to be installed, whether you’re concerned about security or just trying to find something that looks good.

Pickets

You may have heard of pickets, sometimes called slats or even boards. They attach to the above rails with nails or screws and end up making up the body of the fence. That’s right, pickets are the most visible element of any fencing project and are available in a number of varieties. That variation applies to different thicknesses as well, with 1” thick pickets being the premium option whereas ½” pickets are a more affordable option. In the end, what you choose is up to you; you just want to make sure you’re including every element of a functioning wooden fence.
